Finally, eight days after the ice storm that crippled the county, Aiken Electric Coop and SCE&G are reporting that storm-related power outages have been fixed. Pretty much everyone in the area has light, heat and water, and life can return to normal.
Of course, there is still a lot of cleaning up to do all across the area, including on Aiken’s cross country courses. Next weekend, March 1-2, Sporting Days Farm on Route 78 will hold their big USEA/USEF event. This event is a benefit for the Montmorenci Fire Department. Along with members of other fire departments in Aiken County, Montmorenci’s firemen were out every day throughout the storm and its aftermath, helping to clear the roads so that ambulances and fire trucks could pass. They even showed up with their fire trucks at many farms throughout the county, delivering water to horses that had none.
This Sunday, February 23, the Montmorenci Fire Department will be at Sporting Days for a clean-up party to get the cross country course safe and beautiful for next weekend’s event. Any members of Aiken’s equestrian community are invited to come pitch in. Lunch is being provided by Joannah Hall Glass, who owns the farm.
If you want to help out , show up at 12:30, have lunch, then work until 3:30. Bring gloves, rake, tarp, nippers….whatever you have. You can RSVP to Amy Struzzieri at Brookesedge@aol.com so that lunch can be planned.
