It’s Kentucky Derby time! And polo time, and ranch sorting, and eventing and pretty much anything equestrian time. Aiken has so many equestrian events, it is hard to keep track of them all. What to do? Where to go? There are so many choices.
Enjoy polo? Action starts with four polo games on Friday. First up is the Congressional Cup 8-Goal matchup between Peachtree and High Ground which starts at noon at Powderhouse Field. After that, head east to Fox Nation, where Whiskey Victor/IDEA Factor will play Casa Azul in the Congressional Cup 6-Goal Tournament at 3 pm. To wrap up a day of polo, drive over to Crestview Farm to watch the 5pm match between Crestview and Dahlwood in the Pete Bostwick Memorial 12-Goal.
Alternatively, swing by Whitney Field for the National Youth Tournament Series (NYTS) qualifier match at 5pm. All-star players selected at this event will compete for a spot at Nationals, which will be held this fall. This is an excellent opportunity to see the polo stars of the future. There will be an Argentine wine tasting during the game, so this makes a great cocktail hour, too!
Saturday, wake early for a day trip to Poplar Place Farm in Hamilton, Georgia, where the Area 3 Eventing Championships will be held for Beginner Novice through Preliminary level qualifiers.
For those who choose to stay closer to home, Woofstock Mutts and Music, a music festival benefiting the Friends of the Aiken Animal Shelter (FOTAS), will rock out from 10:30 am to 3 pm at the new shelter complex on Wire Road. Follow that up with a visit to Recoletta Ranch in Edgefield for some cow sorting.
Saturday afternoon, make sure to watch the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby. Starting at 5 pm, the Wing Place on East Pine Log Road is hosting a Derby Party benefiting the Equine Rescue of Aiken.
Sunday is another polo-intensive day. Two games are scheduled for the Pete Bostwick 12-Goal tournament: Kenny Ray Fitness versus Crestview at Crestview Farm at 11 am and Foxdale/High Ground versus Dahlwood at New Bridge Polo Club at 5pm. At Aiken Polo Club, Duck Hill will challenge Blackberg Ranch at 3 pm on Whitney Field. Also at 3 pm, Fox Nation will host Woodlawn and Derry Heir in the Congressional Cup 8-Goal. That ought to be enough polo for just about anyone.
