Aiken Equestrian Events, May 23-26, 2014

The weather isn’t the only thing heating up in Aiken. Polo is hot, hot hot! There are 14 polo matches being played this weekend. Contestants range from top notch professionals to youth just getting started.  Take your sunblock and some cold water and go support your favorite team….there is plenty of action to choose from.

Friday kicks off the holiday weekend with a polo explosion! At New Bridge Polo Club, the National Youth Tournament Series 4 Goal begins.  The juniors continue to play throughout the weekend. The Finals are scheduled at 5pm on Sunday.  Also at New Bridge, the Tommy Hitchcock 12 Goal tournament heats up when Dahlwood meets High Ground at 4pm.

The Aiken Polo Club is in full swing with four matches scheduled for Friday.  In the Constitution Cup 4 Goal,  Livinʼ The Vision challenges Hyde Park at 11am, Cedro Azul meets Hickory Furniture Mart at 12:30pm, and Simpatico contests with Mullins/Casa Azul at 3pm.  In the USPA Smoak Family 8 Goal, Peachtree plays Kenny Ray Fitness at 4:30pm.  The last game of the day is hosted by the Wagener Polo Club which has scheduled Derry Heir to play against Miller at Fox Nation in the Masters Cup 6 Goal at 5:30pm.

For those looking for an alternative to polo,  the 15th Annual Shrine Ride, a trail ride benefitting the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, convenes at the Wonderful Weekend ‘n’ Ward Campground
in Ward, SC. Gates open at 8am with rides going out all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Lunch and dinner are provided, as is evening entertainment (a DJ and a dance space).  Last year, over 400 riders attended this event, so bring your friends and head on out!

On Saturday, the polo keeps on playing.  At 10am, Foxdale/Winfield combats Kenny Ray Fitness at Meadow Hill in the Tommy Hitchcock 12 Goal. At the same time, Bodega Gratia/DI Polo plays Woodlawn at Fox Nation.  Downtown, Simpatico is matched against Livinʼ The Vision in the Constitution Cup 4 Goal at 11am and the Smoak Family 8 Goal pits Duck Hill versus Idea Factory at 3pm.

If you need a little respite from polo on Saturday, head over to Paradise Farm to watch a USEF/USEA recognized horse trial. Dressage begins at 7:30am, stadium starts at 11am, and cross country kicks off at 12:30pm.  The water complex is sure to be a favorite if temperatures stay in the 90’s!

As you would expect, there is more polo on Sunday. At 11am, Dahlwood battles Crestview at Crestview Farm.  At the same time, Derry Heir meets Idea Factory at Fox Nation. The Finals of the Constitution Cup 4 Goal will be played at 3pm and, as mentioned, the Finals for the Youth Tournament will be at New Bridge at 5pm.

Monday, Memorial Day, the action slows down a bit to give everyone time to enjoy their barbecue. The Smoak Family 8 Goal has one match scheduled between Duck Hill and Kenny Ray Fitness at 11am. The Masters Cup 6-Goal also has a game scheduled at 11am where Karna will face El Cedro Azul.  Here’s to hoping there will be some good grub served on the sidelines!

Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone.
